Plant tissue sampling should be done during active growth, ideally in the morning when plants are hydrated. Select recently matured, non-damaged leaves from several plants throughout the sampling area. Avoid leaves with visible disease, insect damage, or chemical residue. Place tissue samples in a clean paper bag or envelope, never plastic, as moisture buildup can cause degradation during transit. Clearly label the sample with crop type, location, and date, and ship to the lab as soon as possible.
For accurate soil testing, collect samples from the top 6–8 inches of soil using a soil probe or clean trowel. Take multiple subsamples (10–15) from the testing area in a zigzag pattern, then mix thoroughly in a clean plastic bucket. Remove any rocks, debris, or plant material. Fill a clean sample bag or container with approximately 2 cups (about 1 pint) of the mixed soil. Label clearly with field or bed ID, and allow to air dry if shipping is delayed more than 24 hours.
Use a clean, plastic or glass container that has been thoroughly rinsed with the water source being tested. Let the water run for 2–3 minutes before collecting the sample to flush out stagnant water. Fill the container fully, leaving minimal air space, and cap tightly. If testing irrigation or runoff water, collect during typical flow conditions. Clearly label the sample with source, date, and intended use (e.g., irrigation, fertigation). Refrigerate if shipment will be delayed.
Proper packaging ensures the integrity of your samples. Place dry samples (soil, tissue) in labeled paper bags or sample envelopes; place water samples in sealed plastic bottles. Keep different sample types in separate bags. Use a sturdy box with padding to prevent leaks or breakage, and include a completed submission form inside the box. If sending fresh or perishable materials, ship early in the week via expedited service to avoid weekend delays. Refrigerate samples if needed prior to shipping.
To ensure reliable analysis, LABNET requires specific sample amounts: at least 2 cups of soil, 100–200 grams of fresh plant tissue, or 250 mL (8 oz) of water. For compost, growing media, or fertilizers, submit a full sandwich bag’s worth of material. Avoid sending overly wet, moldy, or contaminated samples, as they may compromise test results. If you're unsure about whether your sample is suitable, contact us for guidance before shipping.
